RBA glitch derails instant payments

Instant fiat payments stalled this week when the RBA had a systems issue. Meanwhile, the lightning network routed around nodes that required a bug patch.

All customers using the Osko fast payments service were affected by an “internal system engineering issue” this week. It may take two days for customers to be certain that their payments have cleared or failed. New transfers are being processed normally.

Osko’s centralised payment mediator experienced a system issue and payments for Australians have been delayed.

The Bitcoin Lightning network, which also processes payments and recently surpassed 5000 bitcoins of liquidity, was affected by a bug this week. A multi-signature transaction with 998 signatures could not be processed by some nodes. Patched software rolled out within hours and the issue was resolved. Although a portion of the network was offline during the outage, the lightning network continued to route transactions.

Certain nodes on the lightning network were unable to process an unusual transaction. Other nodes continued to route transactions while the bug was patched.
